The Bunk Bed Monthly #3

Hi there

I’m sitting in a launderette right now. Or I was when I wrote this email. Welcome to the past. The washing machine gave up on me last week. But inspiration strikes in mysterious ways. And that’s how I was struck by the topic of this month’s email: how to clean and care for your suits.

Appropriate Garment Care

Too many men tend to excessively dry clean their suits. The harsh chemicals damage even the hardiest wool and leave suits with a vile sheen.

There was a stage last summer when, by what I believe to be some well-orchestrated plan, three gulls shat on my same brown jacket — on separate occasions.

I dry cleaned it each time. I regret that now.

I should have let it dry. Then, scraped off the solids, blotted it with a warm, damp cloth, and hunted down each bird and its offspring. But revenge isn’t in my nature — nor is googling how best to remove sky fudge from clothes.

If you must dry clean your suit, do so, say, twice a year max. Opt for a dry cleaners that offers a hand finishing service, too. This way you can guarantee they’re using wool and eco-friendly solutions.

Most of the time, a tired suit simply needs a good press. We’ve got just the people for you to see.

The Valet, based in Piccadilly Arcade, specialises in caring for bespoke and handmade garments. Take your suit to them before deciding to do anything too drastic. They’ll tell you what it needs to best stand the test of time, and red wine stains.

While travelling, the best way to get minor creases out of your two-piece is to hang it in the bathroom with you while you take a scolding hot shower. The steam will see to those creases.

Or, you can avoid your suit creasing altogether with a Fratelli Travel Suit in Harrison’s Finmeresco or Drapers' Supersonic.

Here’s our client Jackson in his Finmeresco number.

The weight of the cloth, combined with its open weave, means it’s simultaneously structured and breathable. The weave also means the cloth bounces back. Perfect for the international traveller.

Scrunch it up. Shove it in a suitcase. Frantically chuck it on. Do as you wish with it. It’s resilient, to say the least.

Anyway, enough rambling, my washing’s done. Enjoy February — and watch out for those winged cretins. Cheers,

Jon from Fratelli
